This is actually the third “Laux family website”. I set up the first one, at lauxes.net, in 2000 or so, using a now-extinct bulletin board software package called YaBB (Yet another Bulletin Board). It ran okay until, I think, 2008 or so. I managed to save the posts in plaintext format, and used XOOPS, a so-called “content management system” or CMS, to reboot the message board and add a few other features (the family info section, with contact info and wishlists, and the cookbook section, plus a few other things that we won’t miss).

I allowed this to continue with only very minimal maintenance until recently, when it basically stopped functioning. The problems were with the web hosting service, which has really gone downhill in recent years, and XOOPS, which is no longer really supported. After trying to get it up and running, I decided to start over, using a new domain name (this one, laux.website). So here we are.

I DO however have all the data for the old website. I am looking into ways to transfer it efficiently to this place. If you need something from the old website, let me know; I can retrieve it pretty quickly.

Incidentally, this site runs on WordPress, which is far and away the most widely used site software on the internet…I read somewhere the other day that 40% of all the sites on the net use it. I don’t know whether to believe that, but it is very very popular, and support for it is rock-solid. The hosting company, BlueHost, is also reportedly one of the best around. IAC I don’t think we’ll have any problems with this site for a long time, if ever.

Although, of course, nothing lasts forever.

This site still has lots of rough edges. Frankly.

Granted I’m just a crash test dummy…but even a dummy can see that much.
